Advent days 1-9

Once I’d washed all of the jars I made a (totally OCD) list of what I wanted to put in each jar. I wanted a mix of chocolate, toys and activities, I also wanted to be realistic and not overstretch myself on days when we were already busy. Then, because all of the jars were different sizes I needed to decide which jar would go with which day. (I do like to over-complicate my life!)

Day 1  glitter glue.

Day 2  chocolate cars (these were a big hit)

Day 3  threading jingle bells. I got a lot of my ideas from Counting Coconuts there are lots of great activities to do with young children. Eli enjoyed it at the time but hasn’t asked to get them out again.

Day 4 mini wild animals (from the pound shop)

Day 5 Christmas tree play-dough. I made play-dough in the microwave and added green food colouring, glitter and sequins. It turns out americans have much better (or worse depending on your point of view) food colouring than we do so the colour wasn’t very bright.

At first Eli just wanted to bury his animals from day 4 in it.

Then I remembered we had some Christmas tree cutters and we spent ages rolling and cutting out Christmas trees. We’ve got this out every day since.

Day 6 a jar full of foam numbers that I’d picked up for him a while ago. He loves numbers! We sorted them in a muffin tin for a while.

Day 7 chocolate santas.

Day 8 Christmas shapes painting – we didn’t do this because he was too ill.

Day 9 spooning pom-poms. Again from Counting Coconuts.

Look at his bright red face, he’s still not well.

Advent

I started thinking about advent in October. (I like to waste time worrying about things that are of no consequence) E is turning 3 just after Christmas and in the past few months his awareness of what’s going on around him has really grown so it feels like this is the year to start building memories.

I found this on pinterest. The link trail gets through to not on the highstreet  where you can buy the tags for £16. There is no way my husband would have thought that was a good idea so I got creative.

I’ve been hoarding jars all year with an idea I might use them for christmas presents. I got  the numbers from Skip To My Lou. Everything was attached together with double sided sticky tape.

I stuck snowflake decorations on some of the lids to cover up the writing etc and they were done.

Eli loves it and we hopefully we’ll be able to use it for many more years.

Over the next few days I’ll upload pictures of the contents. (I’m sure you can’t wait!)

I got the idea here. They’re shoebox lids covered with fabric – I knew I was keeping them for something!

Engagement card

The inspiration came from here  I thought I had a heart shaped stamp but I couldn’t find it so I used some heart shaped split pins – I have no idea where I got them from!

I did the lettering by drawing it freehand in pencil and punching lots of tiny holes in it with a pin and then back stitching. It was quite fiddly so wouldn’t work for longer words but looks really cute!

I  was intending to write a post about my advent calander but it turns out I didn’t take any decent pictures. I’ll try and take some tomorrow when the light will hopefully be better.

Play Time

I love the idea of having words around the house – it must be the teacher in me! I pinned this one on pinterest. I wanted ‘play’ for the playroom and was mulling over it for a little while when I found some really cheap foam board in Hobbycraft. Of course I didn’t have an suitable yarn for wrapping it with so I decided to use fabric.

Initially I wrapped each letter in a different fabric but it looked a bit country-kitchen so I opted for one pattern for all of the letters.

We’ve had this photo-frame clock since just before Eli was born (he’s almost three!) I finally talked my lovely husband into sorting it out. He decided to recolour each of the photos to make a colour wheel. So quite a bit of work and a trip to Staples for some photo paper later this is what we ended up with:

Then Ben had the idea of making play into playtime. (He’s a clever one) We choose a different kind of font, I cut it out of black foam and we were finally done!
